In the big picture, Board Certified Behavior Analysts use the science of Applied Behavior Analysis to make our world better tomorrow than it is today. ABA is used in many different industries such as business, nutrition, fitness, safety, training, animals, and so much more. The science of ABA has evolved greatly since it’s conception in the 70’s and continues to refine it’s practices. Cooper, Heron and Heward (2007), say it best, “Applied Behavior Analysis is the science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior”. There were alot of big words in that last sentence but my favorite one is “socially significant”. What that really means, is that we, Behavior Analysts are focusing on things that MATTER to our clients and families. In the Early Intervention realm, quality ABA has the following characteristics:
1. Compassionate – Providers are kind, present, thoughtful, and patient with all members of the family. Providers meet the family, child, support system where they are at, without judgement.
2. Developmentally Appropriate – Providers are educated on typical developmental norms to anchor programs in healthy and appropriate goals.
3. Flexible – Providers and programs are adaptable to be most effective given the client, family, environment and many other factors. If a team member isn’t comfortable with one approach there are many ways to achieve the same goal.
4. Family Centered – Empowering parents to create more opportunities for our client’s success has shown to be the most effective approach in outcomes.
5. Routine Based Interventions – Learning to embed opportunities for growth into family routines is key to success.
